Beautiful status pages

Perhaps due to the success of services such as Get Satisfaction, there seems to be a growing trend for the more “in touch” software companies to provide public visibility on the progress of software features. At the functional end of things is the Dropbox approach which enables users to add new or vote for requested features. However, I came across two much more beautiful examples recently. The Free Agent Central Depot page, which presents new service features as “Still at depot”, “En route” or “Arrived”. Similarly, Cultured Code – developers of the rather marvellous Things task list manager – present their status page as an airport Arrivals Board, where new features can range from “Full speed” to “Landed”, or even “Grounded” when a feature or project has stumbled to a halt.

I’m sure there are further examples of this approach for us to admire as designers, but more importantly as an end-user this public visibility of behind the scenes project status feels more inclusive, makes me aware that the company are a bunch of people rather than a faceless software house and that it’s worthwhile caring not only about your product but also the process involved in communicating, creating and developing it.
